Greg Cathey, SVP Walmart, wrote the article that I attached to this post. In the article, Cathey states:
“After four months of successful deliveries, we are taking the next step by expanding restaurant delivery beyond Subway restaurants located inside Walmart stores. That means customers can increasingly turn to Walmart for meals from locations both inside and outside our stores, while still having the option to combine that meal with their Walmart order.”
This is what Cathey isn’t saying.
Two months ago, I broke the story that Walmart has signed agreements with Chipotle Mexican Grill, Domino’s, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and other restaurants, to utilize Walmart+ drivers to provide Express Delivery of online orders to customers. Walmart is also in discussion with Wonder about testing their robotic bowl mixing system in select stores. ❌
I can now report that Walmart is also going to leverage their partnership with Wing, to use drones across 20 markets, more than 40 million Americans, to make deliveries. Note to Walmart: Contact Ido Yaacov, CEO of Civiro. They’ve invented an exceptional drone system that closes a massive gap in the drone model.
Walmart is becoming DoorDash and Uber Eats. This is only the beginning.
Walmart has a partnership with Nash, led by Mahmoud Ghulman. Nash is the leading last mile orchestration platform on the market. Nash has partnered with Autolane, led by Ben Seidl; AutoLane is the company that is enabling “autonomous commerce” to become a reality.
Walmart is going to learn very quickly that customers will overwhelmingly want to have an autonomous vehicle or a drone to make their delivery. This isn’t an opinion. Consumers have become disgusted with the unprofessional behavior of delivery drivers from DoorDash, Uber Eats, and other companies. The argument that consumers will think autonomous deliveries are “inconvenient” is wrong. Consumers are choosing safety over convenience.
I anticipate that Walmart will scale into ride sharing via a partnership with Tesla; internal discussions are taking place at Walmart. Nash and AutoLane will make this possible. Walmart can become bigger than Uber in the U.S.
Congratulations Walmart for Thinking BIG.
