THE WAY TO INCREASE RETAIL SALES IS 1,000 METERS AT A TIME

Walmart uses geospatial technology, a powerful data science model that divides geographic areas into precise hexagonal grids, to optimize delivery zones for greater efficiency. By redefining how they map delivery areas, Walmart is able to deliver to 12 million more households across the U.S.

I believe in the power of using geospatial technology. However, most geospatial platforms—like those from Esri, CARTO or Mapbox only provide tools for mapping customer locations, drive times, demographics, and traffic patterns. They’re excellent analytical tools. However, they don’t provide the following:

1️⃣ A prescriptive framework for increasing market share by grid.

2️⃣ A unified methodology tying geospatial intelligence directly to marketing, fulfillment, and execution.

3️⃣ An embedded approach to competitive displacement and grid-level conquest.

To change that, I invented GRIDD — Geospatial Response to Increase Density and Demand — in 2013. GRIDD turns geospatial insight into a strategy to grow revenue, increase market share, and optimize last mile fulfillment. GRIDD utilizes specialized tools and techniques for marketing, sales and analysis.

I designed GRIDD to do the following:

✅ Grid-Based Demand Engineering

GRIDD leverages the military grid reference systems (MGRS) to divide a retailer’s trade area into precise 1,000-meter squares, turning sprawling retail regions into actionable micro-markets. Most retailers operate with zip-code or DMA-level segmentation—which is too broad to optimize localized demand. GRIDD focuses on the lowest-level battlefield: the neighborhood block.

✅ Customer Penetration Focus

Retailers use GRIDD to ask this question: “What percentage of the people in each grid square shop at our stores?” Asking the question is profound. Traditional tools tell a retailer where their customers are, but GRIDD asks where they’re not. It identifies white space and converts it into sales strategies to increase DEMAND.

From there, retailers can identify underserved areas, launch hyper-targeted marketing campaigns, optimize fulfillment and delivery routes, and conquer market share grid by grid. ❌

✅ Demand-Driven Last Mile Optimization

By aligning marketing, inventory positioning, and delivery routes with grid-level demand, GRIDD does something Esri and others don’t inherently do: link geospatial insight directly to fulfillment execution and demand creation. ❌❌

✅ 4. Precision Marketing & Sales Uplift

Instead of national or regional campaigns, GRIDD enables hyperlocal marketing—targeted outreach, digital ads or promotions designed to shift shopping behavior one grid square at a time. It’s the best customer acquisition system available.

GRIDD enables retailers to not just analyze where customers live, but act with precision to acquire them. Retailers don’t need more data. They need a better strategy. ❌❌❌
